Will I Be Able to Get Financial Assistance for Online Masters Degrees?

By plrprousers | November 3, 2009

Number 1:  Use Any Programs Available Through Your Current Employer

Very few people go right from their undergraduate degree into a Masters program, and in fact, many of the absolute best schools that offer Masters degrees online won’t even accept students that are trying to move directly from their bachelor’s studies into a Masters program. Instead, they prefer that students get some kinds of professional experience in the real world before returning for further studies.

There is one very large advantage that you need to be aware of if you’ve started working and have decided to start looking into Masters degrees online. Many employers have programs that are designed to promote employees further education. You should be sure to look into any options your company might have in this regard as it is very possible, and even likely that you can get them to subsidize your education in some way.

Number 2: Apply For Scholarships and Bursaries

One of the biggest mistakes made by people who are looking for Masters degrees online is that they don’t take advantage of all of the different scholarship and bursary programs which might be available to them. First of all, many schools, especially when talking about online schools that might have a real world campus, are going to have a host of programs available to their students.

In addition, there are many national and state funding programs in place to provide financial support to students that are deemed deserving. If you do your research into the funding that might be available to you, you could end up only paying a fraction of the total cost of your education.

Number 3: Use Student Loans Responsibly

If you still don’t have enough funding between your employer’s advanced education program and any scholarships or bursaries that you might have applied for, then you need to look into student financial assistance. Because so many schools that allow you to earn Masters degrees online, most are now fully accredited by the correct bodies. What’s more is that they qualify as full-fledged universities that will allow you to apply for student loans during your enrollment and studies.  It can be a financial burden to depend 100% on student loans to complete a program, but they can be used to help supplement your earnings or savings to help get you through your program. Of course, the potential increased earnings you will be facing with a graduate degree will help you pay this back sooner.
