Why You Should Have Health Insurance

Health insurance is required when an individual is ill or requires medical check ups from a provider. Health insurance will prevent the patient from being expected to pay out of pocket expenses towards medical bills because they do not have any health insurance. Though patients have the right to be seen without insurance, they are still liable to pay the expenses once the services have been rendered. Health insurance will pay a large portion of these expenses and little to none out of pocket expenses are required from the patient if placed in this situation.

Because the cost of getting sick can be very expensive. Even if you think you are healthy unexpected things can happen. Two quick (and real life) examples from clients of mine that came to me after it they got hit with BIG bills.

A 40 year old man in great condition. He rides a bike over 50 miles a week. Thought he did not need health coverage until he had to have his appendix removed. That simple operation cost him $32,000.

A 31 yr old woman who had not seen a doctor for any illness in 15 years. She took a bad spill while skiing. Two hospital stays, two ambulance rides, one surgery to put pins in her arm, one surgery to remove the pins, physical therapy etc etc. The cost is over $70,000 and they are not done yet.

At the very least get a high deductible that will provide for catastrophic coverage.

Consider it a safety net.

Patients that enter a hospital with a life threatening illness without insurance die at up to 7 times the rate of people that enter a hospital with a life threatening illness that are insured.

A hospital bill for a broken leg can get your house repossessed.

well! in my opinion one should get medical insurance so that his health problem may not become his wealth problem.

A routine appendectomy can run $30,000+, heart surgery $150,000 – $250,000+, Cancer surgery & chemotherapy $500,000+. If you can write a check for these without any problem then you may not need any.

Check with the Dept of Insurance in your state or the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website (naic.org/state_web_map.htm) for links to the state officials where you live information about health care options.
