Reducing Your Heating Oil Costs

By plrprousers | January 6, 2010

If you are at all worried about the cost of heating your home this winter, you will be glad there is something you can do about it. Because energy prices continue to rise, it can result in very high heating costs especially in the cold winter months. But there are things that can be done to reduce the amount that you have to spend on oil for heating.

Closing the vents in some of the less regularly used rooms in your homes is the first thing you can do to reduce costs. This will reduce the chance of heat being lost through these vents. Other rooms will then feel warmer as the heat in other rooms is directed back away from the closed vents and this will reduce the need to have the heating on constantly as it is trapped inside.

Making sure that your home has adequate insulation is another thing you can do. It is quite often the case that older homes do not have proper insulation which can see heat escaping in places like the attic. There are government schemes in place which will help with the cost of improving the insulation in your home in order to reduce energy costs. There are certain insulation techniques available which can help to keep heat within the home instead of escaping thus reducing oil costs.

Another thing you can do is turn down the temperature of your hot water. A lot of water heaters are automatically set to boiling temperatures but by turning this temperature down slightly, you can reduce the amount of oil which is used. You can also make it safer in your home by reducing the temperature of the hot water.

Replacing old windows and doors can be a great way of keeping heat in. New windows work very effectively at keeping heat indoors and help to keep oil costs down.

Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Savvy people are changing over to oil as a home fuel though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with heating oil to make sure they don’t run dry in the cold weather.
