Eliminate Your Debt With The Envelope Method
By plrprousers | December 6, 2009
Using the right method to help you get out of debt can make all the difference in the world. A critical part of whatever method you choose is setting up an effective budget. One of the most common budget methods available is is known as the envelope method.
To begin, write down a list of all of your typical expenses. These expenses are what you would normally purchase with a credit card or debit card. On your list, break it down into different categories such as groceries, entertainment, gas for your vehicle, and personal grooming for things like hair or nails. Then you will need to take out an envelope for each category and label them accordingly.
Once you have your list, figure out the amount of money you will likely spend on each category for one week, two weeks, or on a monthly basis. One of the easiest ways to do it is every two weeks since most people are paid on a bi-weekly basis. After you have figured up the total, take that amount of cash and put it in each envelope.
If you end up running out of money for a particular envelope before you get paid again, then you’re out of luck. You’ll just have to go without until the next pay period. This holds you accountable for how much money you spend every pay period unlike when you purchase items with your credit cards or your debit card. Another benefit is that you are unable to take money from one of your other categories once you have exhausted your money like you can by purchasing items with a debit card or your credit cards.
This tactic will make you realize that you’re spending more money than you have budgeted. Then you will be faced with a decision to either increase the amount of your budget, or learn to change your lifestyle to live within your means until you no longer have any debts.
You should know have a better understanding of why the envelope method of budgeting is such a popular method. It’s simple and it works. Give it a try and kiss your debt goodbye forever.
