Credit Card Guidelines For The Average Joe
By plrprousers | March 20, 2010
The world of credit cards seems to have spiraled out of control lately. For those who find their interest charges increasing, and their payments never-ending, there are some simple guidelines that you can follow to make the whole mess easier to navigate. Remember, these little plastic passes are not meant to get you to the good life without earning it.
Take notes from financially successful friends. It seems as if they are always paying with plastic. It leaves others wondering how they do it. The truth is, they are probably using their cards like cash. They use it to pay everything from their groceries to their personal trainer. Here is the really important part, when the bill comes they pay it, all of it. They keep very careful track of their spending and limit it to what they can actually pay for.
You must be able to exercise some will power. Having the little plastic wonder does not mean that you can go spending without a care. You need to know your personal limits based on what you can afford on what you make. If you cannot afford the trip to the golf resort, for instance, do not go. The cheap golf outing is more enjoyable anyway.
Hobbies and other leisure activities can cost a lot of money. Just because you have put yourself on a budget does not mean that you are unable to enjoy them anymore. If you’re a skier, for example, there are affordable ways to get your hands on alpine skiing equipment. You do not have to shop in the specialty stores all the time.
If you really want the top-of-the-line stuff, and just feel good when you manage to pay the top-of-the-line prices, then a delayed reward system might be what will work out better for you. Instead of using your credit card, which is a loan, put money aside a little at a time until you have enough. The amount you save in interest charges will be amaze you.
Make a positive change in your finances. Instead of paying your card company interest every month, pay in full and take what you would have paid in interest and set it aside in an account that earns interest for you. Use what you have learned to put yourself ahead.
If regular usage is just not something that you are able to handle, then consider keeping one just for emergencies. A shoe sale is not an emergency. Needing to pay a tow-truck driver is an emergency.
